School’s History

The St. Stephen’s Nursery School is located in Lower Black Rock, St. Michael in the grounds of the St. Stephen's Anglican Church. The St. Stephen’s Nursery School was established on 18 October 1993, following the amalgamation of the St. Stephen’s Infants and Junior Schools. It was officially opened on 15 July 1994 by the Honourable Tyrone Estwick, the then Minister of Education.

The school’s facilities offer the students a clear picturesque view of cruise ships approaching the Bridgetown Port. The school plant consists of one main building housing the Nursery students (3-4 years) and two prefab buildings containing four classrooms, and two external classrooms housing the Reception students (4-5 years).

As one of the first four Government Nursery Schools offering free nursery education, it initially operated a shift system, as it catered to students in the 3-5 age range, through daily half-day morning and afternoon programmes. It continues to be a unique Nursery school, being the only Nursery school which caters to Reception classes.

The school’s first principal was Mrs. Catherine Blackman. The school also boasts of being the only Nursery school in the island to have had a male Principal, Mr. Grenville Hinds. The current Principal is Miss Shelly E. Leacock.

Today, the St. Stephen’s Nursery School offers a full-day programme to approximately 150 students. The school has a teaching staff of a Principal, a Senior Teacher and seventeen teachers, and support staff of two Nursery Aides, three School Assistants, a Parent Volunteer, two janitors, a general worker, two school meals servers, a clerk typist (shared), a security officer and a watchman.

The school’s uniform is mainly a turquoise colour. The girls’ uniform was adjusted from September 2023. It no longer carries sleeves nor pleats. The patterns for the girls and boys respectively are below.
